How often do we find ourselves falling short of being who we believe we could and should be? How much energy is expended in self-recrimination after each such perceived shortcoming? How much in promising and pressuring ourselves to meet the demands of this invisible benchmark next time? Does this work? Or are we in fact setting ourselves up for yet another round of idealism, perfectionism, disappointment, and harsh self-judgment.
Pathwork lecture # 83 invites us instead to look at this “idealized self-image" directly. In beginning to understand the origins of this pseudo-protection, we may begin to loosen its grip upon us. We can then step more and more into the real self, replacing our unreasonable internal demands with deep acceptance and a relaxed, authentic self-confidence.
